Hi everyone! My name is Mr Jefferies and I am really excited for you all to start in year 2 in September, I hope you and your family have all been really safe during lock down. I have filmed a quick welcome video for you to watch, I hope you enjoy it, Have a lovely summer holiday. See you in September!
This week we have written our own versions of the story Journey by Aaron Becker. We've all worked really hard and written some fantastic stories!
In maths we have been finding fractions of shapes looking for 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 2/4, 3/4, and knowing that all parts must be equal.
We have been coders in computing. Using Purple Mash we have been coding and debugging simple programs. You can have another go at home, look for the 2code chimp on Purple Mash.
Week 1 and 2
Welcome back! This term our topic is Journeys. We have read the story Journey by Aaron Becker, we found it very unusual because there were no words! We have had a great time talking to each other about what the characters might be saying or thinking.
In maths we have been learning all about 2d and 3d shapes and we have been describing their properties.
All of our topic work this term links to different people in History who had a famous journey. This week it was all about Rosa Parks, the children were very empathetic to Rosa and black civil rights movement. We made links between her wanting everyone to be equal and the word equals in maths which means the same as.
We loved learning all about Dinosaurs! Our favorite bits were finding the Ststephenosaurus in the allotment, writing about different dinosaurs and writing cryptic dinosaur poems! In maths we were brilliant at learning our times tables and linking that to division. Why don't you test us on 2,3,5 or 10s? We also learned to tell the time to five minuets, please keep practicing at home. We found out about Mary Anning in history who was a famous fossil hunter. We also made beautiful dinosaur artwork and a dinosaur that could move. Mr Jefferies took photos of the work so that you could proudly display the artwork at home.
This week we have been working hard on our subtraction with regrouping. We have needed to be super neat with our tens and ones drawing so that we can be accurate with our answers.
We have also enjoyed writing our own versions of the Way Back Home story that we have been learning in English.
On Thursday we had our visit from the Explorer dome! It was out of this world! Check out some pictures of us about to enter the dome!
Weeks 1 and 2
Mr Jefferies has been on paternity leave for weeks 1 and 2. Thank you for your kind comments and wishes for Mrs Jefferies and baby Charlie.
Draco class have been really busy with Ms Nichols and Mrs Hughes keeping a keen eye on the class with the teachers that have been covering Mr Jefferies.
The children have been learning all about space! In History we have found out about both people and animals who have been to space and loved learning about the space race between NASA and ROSCOSMOS. We also talked about the feelings of Michael Colins who went all the way to the moon but stayed in the rocket! What a good friend!
Week two was FAB week. The children made friendship bracelets in cross phases and had a lovely time. Emily F was voted for by a landslide to be friend of the week.
In maths we have been leaning about addition. Ask your child to show you our strategy for adding two 2 digit numbers.
In English we have been looking at the story 'The Way Back Home' by Oliver Jeffers ( Not Mr Jefferies!) We have used the playpod to build and fix spaceships!
Term 1 highlights
- Great Fire of St Stephens
- Building gingerbread man traps
- Baking bread with Warburton's bakery.
We have has a super first term in year 2. In maths we have been learning all about place value and understanding the tens and ones of a two digit number. These super skills will really help us in our adding and subtraction next term. We have also used our skills to order numbers and use < > and = signs when talking about numbers.
In English we have used the story of the Gingerbread Man to help us with our learning and wrote our own versions with a new delicious character. We have also used our word magic skills to understand what non chronological means. When we knew this we could write non chronological reports about foxes and owls. We have learned lots of facts!
We have been super scientist finding out all about materials and testing which ones would be best to keep a gingerbread man dry. We liked learning new words like waterproof.
This year at St Stephen's we are taking part in the better behavior project with lots of schools in South Glos. Mr Jefferies is leading the project in our school so luckily Draco class get to be the first children to get a sneak peek at some new ideas!
One of those new ideas is to have a recognition board in the classroom. This is so all of the adults can reognise the children for a specific thing.
We have already completed our first one for 'Quiet independent learning' Take a look! Next up is 'Being ready to learn.'
Also from next week (23.9.19) Check out our whole school recognition board for 'Fantastic Walking'
